Replacing Inductors in Crossover for Heathtkit AS 101

    Hello all,

Is there any benefit to replacing the inductors in the crossovers for the Heathkit AS 101? I was thinking to switching to air core inductors of the same value as those in the stock crossovers which from what I understand are 1.75mH. From stock, I have already replaced the capacitos and L-Pads with great sonic results. Just wondering if anyone can suggest any sonic benefits to replacing the inductors as well. Thanks.

Air core inductors would be 4X the size of the stock ones. They would not fit in the existing housing, and by itself would probably not justify the effort and expense.

What I might consider doing is dial the L-pad in to where you like it, measure it's value and then replace it with a resistor(s). Removing the L-Pad will improve the sound more than replacing inductors.

I am not concerned about the size of the inductor as I would rig it to the crossover housing accordingly. It does not necesasrily have to sit within the existing housing for my tastes. Thanks for the suggestion, but I often utilize the attentuator depending on what genre of music I am listening to and the quality of the recording. I'd rather not remove it.

That being said, I am just wondering if replacing the inductor would have any sonic benefit? Thanks.

I have not used those particular crossovers, but I have used many stock altec crossovers. I have refurbed several of those stock crossovers, too. IME, using quality air core inductors will make an improvement in the sound of the system; perhaps not quite as great as re-capping, but noticeable.

Right biggest improvement is better caps. Inductors, I wouldn't worry about, others might. Just about as cheap to go active.
